Academics

By taking classes in the summer, students have the opportunity to transition to the expectations of UC Irvine coursework and to begin completing major courses, or General Education requirements before the Fall quarter begins. Smaller classes during Summer Session also mean more one-on-one time with professors or TA’s!

Academic Support

To ensure academic success, Transfer Summer Success students will have special access to support from the UCI Learning and Academic Resource Center (LARC) and the Transfer Center. At LARC, students will find many useful academic resources including study skills workshops and small-group academic assistance. Individual tutoring will also be available to students for a small fee. The Transfer Center, a ‘Home Away from Home’ on campus, provides opportunities for social networking as well as general support for you in your transition.

Courses

We recommend that you exercise care in selecting Summer courses. Consider the following ways to make use of Summer Session:

  • Consider enrolling in courses offered in Session I, Session II, the 10-week Session, or both Session I and Session II.
  • Enroll in courses that you are certain will fulfill graduation requirements for you
  • Complete prerequisites for courses that you plan to take during the year
  • Take a course that does not relate to your chosen field but looks interesting – Summer at UCI is a time of possibility: take a course that was not available at your previous school or one that you will not have time for during the year!

Available Courses

There are over 800 different courses offered during Summer Session. Please search for courses prior to completing your Transfer Summer Start paper registration. By searching your courses, you will be able to view the available courses (including their times and locations), obtain the appropriate 5-digit course code for the paper Transfer Summer Start Registration Form, and determine if there is space available in the course (the “enroll” icon indicates there is space available, and the “waitlist” icon indicates the course is full). DO NOT ATTEMPT TO ENROLL IN YOUR DESIRED COURSES ONLINE- YOU MUST ENROLL USING THE PAPER REGISTRATION FORM.

During Summer Session, two courses (8 units) per 5-week session is considered a full load. The 5-week session moves very quickly so you will want to be sure not to overextend your commitments.

To ensure that you are adequately prepared for the course(s) that you enroll in, and that you are not duplicating credits you have already completed at the school you are transferring from, academic advising through your School is offered as a part of the process of applying to the transfer Summer Summer Start Program (see separate instructions on the Registration page).
