SUSTAINABILITY & EQUALITY: Important Aspects of Environmental Sociology
Sociology 171 (4 units)
This course presents the different experiences in sustainability which have been constructed in the national context within the past few years, both within the public and the private sector. It presents sustainability as a triad composed of economic, social and environmental aspects. Specifically, it examines biodiversity from the institutional and social context, organic agriculture, environmental services, the forest, fishing resources, sustainable development, treatment of wastes, alternative sources of energy, and just commerce. These experiences are presented in the context of models of development which have greatly affected society in social, economic, environmental, cultural, and political forms.
